The athlete won the race in a course record of 2 hours 17 minutes 16 seconds hitting number five on the all-time rankings.

Joyciline Jepkosgei came in second.

Athlete Kibiwott Kandie is the latest Kenyan to shatter a world marathon record in Europe.

Kandie broke the half marathon world record after clocking 57 minutes and 32 seconds on Sunday, December 6, in Valencia, Spain.

The race saw him shed off some 29 seconds from the previous record held by his Kenyan compatriot Geoffrey Kamworor, which he set in 2019.

Kandie beat Uganda's Jacob Kiplimo who finished second in the highly competitive race becoming the first person ever to break 58 minutes mark.

Former Prime Minister Raila Odinga celebrated the athlete noting that he had kept the country's long distance winning tradition going.

"Congratulations Kibiwott Kandie on breaking the half marathon world record in Valencia. You have done us proud by keeping our nation's distance running tradition going and Kenyans are proud of you," stated Raila.

In the woman's race, Genzebe Dibaba from Ethiopia carried the title in her debut after clocking 1:05:18.

She became the 12th fastest woman to ever cover 21.1 kilometres.
