Students from the University of Nairobi on Monday, December 7 blocked the University Way roundabout in Nairobi's Central Business District (CBD).
The students, who were carrying placards, protested the government's plan to triple University fees in 2021.
The students chanted as some of them occupied sections of the highway blocking cars using the Uhuru highway and University way.
A police officer stationed at the roundabout who was manning traffic stood and watched helplessly as the students took to the streets.
The students also protested the move by the Higher Education Loans Board (HELB) to slash the average loan offered to university students by Ksh 8,000.
HELB CEO, Charles Ringera, revealed that the board had reduced the loan from Ksh 45,000 to Ksh 37,000 due to the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic.
On Thursday, December 3 the University of Nairobi Student Association (UNSA) Chairman Eddie Mutua asked the government to rescind the decision to increase university fees in 2021.
"As the biggest stakeholders, we must be involved and we must be included in that conversation, failure to that we will not agree to anything that is passed.
"I want to urge the Government to rethink its stance on this matter, to review this proposal and do away with it because it is unrealistic, he stated.
The Ministry of Education and the National Treasury had approved a proposal by vice-chancellors to raise the fees citing the increasing cost of providing tertiary education.
While appearing before the National Assembly Committee on Education on Wednesday, December 2, senior treasury and education officials proposed that university fees be increased from Ksh 16,000 to Ksh 48,000.
