The exodus of Nairobians leaving the city and traveling upcountry after reports of a looming lockdown and restriction measures has attracted the Cabinet's attention.

While speaking in Western Kenya on Monday, December 7, Devolution CS Eugene Wamalwa hinted that the Cabinet was considering approving the governors' request to impose restrictions on movements during the December holidays.

"I agree with the Governors that imposing a lockdown would be beneficial for everyone. It is a good move.

"Relatives and families should discuss among themselves and opt to send funds to each other for celebrations through money transfer," Wamalwa urged.

He added that Covid-19 was devastating and had led to the death of politicians and renowned doctors. The CS argued restrictions would curb the spread of the virus, especially to the elderly population that is domiciled in the rural areas.

President Uhuru Kenyatta and the Ministry of Health have not yet responded to the request made by Governors, who lamented that Covid-19 would spread and cripple the health sector and economy if Kenyans in the cities were allowed to travel upcountry.

The National Emergency Response Committee (NERC) is set to present its recommendations to President Uhuru Kenyatta on measures to adopt during the festive period to help contain the spread of Covid-19.

The council presented a memorandum that recommended restricted movement in and out of Nairobi, Mombasa, Kiambu, Nakuru, Kajiado, Uasin Gishu, Busia, Machakos, Kisumu and Kilifi.

Kenyatta is expected to address the nation on the new measures revised by the National Emergency Response Committee on Coronavirus (NERC).

On Sunday, December 6, a representative of the Guardian Bus Company stated that some routes were already booked from 13th to 28th December.

Various bus termini across Nairobi including Country Bus witnessed hundreds of people either booking or travelling upcountry too.
