The family of the late doctor Stephen Mogusu have asked Kenyans to accord them privacy as they mourn their kin's death.

Mogusu, a doctor who was serving in Machakos County under the Universal Health Coverage(UHC) pilot programme, succumbed to Covid-19 on Monday, December 7.

During a visit to the KU referral hospital where Mogusu had been admitted, his sister disclosed that the deceased's mobile phone had been ringing continuously since his demise.

The family also stated that he had left an outstanding bill of Ksh400,000.

They have since asked the government to prioritise the protection and welfare of medics who are on the frontline in the fight against Covid-19.

"It is the responsibility of the government to ensure that those in the front line get Personal Protective Equipment (PPEs). We are losing those who should be helping us in the battle against the virus," Naftal Ogweno, Mogusu's father stated.

On her part, Mogusu's mother Agnes Mogusu mourned the deceased as a  hard-working and humble young man.

"I had hope in him. I can only imagine the pain he underwent at the hospital bed," she stated.

Before his death, Mogusu expressed his frustration with the mismanagement in the health sector that has seen a section of doctors serve for nearly five months without a salary.

Mogusu urged his colleagues to be more adamant about getting their pay or to abandon their jobs.

"My dear colleagues, let me take this opportunity to admonish you today to get your pay or get out while you can with your health and life intact," he stated.

His plight has also earned him trolls in death, with a section of bloggers claiming to have had his payslip, and purporting that he had been paid before succumbing to Covid-19.
