Panic has engulfed Sangurur village in Elgeyo Marakwet after mysterious 10 feet deep cracks formed in the area leading to the displacement of 20 families.

Residents claim that small cracks appeared after huge rains that pounded the area in November but the faults mysteriously deepened.

The deep cracks are threatening to swallow the ground and poses a huge threat to the lives of hundreds of residents living in the area.

"We were very shocked to see the ground shifting, we have called the county government to help us because we have so many complaints.

"There is a huge rock on top of the hill that is almost rolling down after the cracks started to appear," explained one of the residents.

Children from Sangurur have been warned against playing in the area as they fear they could fall into the deep fault lines that have formed in the area.

The residents that have fled the area have been accommodated by families and relatives in neighbouring towns.

"The government should be swift in their response if you see the crack, it runs from the hilltop to the valley, we don't know where it ends," a resident complained.

According to the locals, the cracks continue to widen with each passing day as the residents run out of options of where to relocate to.

The residents want to government to offer assistance in relocation and provide alternative land to resettle the affected families.

In April, Elgeyo Marakwet experienced floods that led to deaths with property worth thousands of shillings destroyed.
