A Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) officer was among four people arrested for allegedly kidnapping a businessman at Kiawara Trading Centre in Nyeri County.
The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) on Friday, December 18, disclosed that officers based in Nyeri conducted an operation to nab the culprits.
The detectives claimed that the four lured the businessman through his employee's mobile phone.
"Upon arriving where the gang’s vehicle lay in wait, the victim was bundled inside and whisked towards Nyeri town," DCI explained.
An abduction report was filed and the detectives went on to pursue the abductors.
"The suspects are in lawful custody pending further investigations and arraignment, while the vehicle has since been detained," the DCI stated.
The case comes weeks after an alleged abduction of Thika businessman, Julius Gitau, where the police have raised questions over the incident.
In an analysis of CCTV footage obtained from the crime scene, detectives stated that the clips did not reveal the alleged abduction.
Thika West Deputy County Commander Mathioya Mbogo noted that Gitau's car was not even at the scene where he claimed he was abducted.
"I instructed the relevant department of our security committee to expedite the review of the CCTV cameras in the area and the result was a negative incident of interest between 9:30 and 10 a.m, being the time cited as when the abduction occurred," the commander stated.
Gitau had resurfaced after going missing for two months. Gatanga Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) boss John Kanda confirmed that the businessman was found alive after disappearing back in September.
"We have spoken to him. He is alive. I always told you we were on top of this search, and our leads were that it was immature to conclude he was dead. He is now heading to our offices for processing," Kanda stated.
