Former Kaloleni MP Gunga Mwinga has died while undergoing treatment at a Mombasa Hospital.

The family of the ex-legislator confirmed his passing on Sunday, December 27 at the age of 45.

Gunga, a lawyer by profession, became the MP for Kaloleni in 2013.

He would, however, not succeed to run for a second term when he was beaten by the current MP Paul Katana in 2017.

That same year, he defected from Kadu Asili to the Devolution Party of Kenya where he became the chairman and party leader.

He attributed his defection from Kadu Asili due to the party losing direction adding that it was operating on an auto-pilot.

"I could not continue leading a party that wants to remain local. I have tried to cut a national figure for the party but it seems some of the officials have turned it into a family affair which does not augur well with the aspirations of members.

“I have personally championed for equitable distribution of national and county government resources specifically at the coast and I will continue doing so,” he explained at the time.

The politician has been vocal on leadership matters in the Coast region noting that there was no leader to unite all the coastal leaders.

“So, we have leaders but we do not have a leader of the leaders. And without this leader of leaders, no matter what we do, we will not be united,” Mwinga stated in June 2020.
