Pupils of Nyamrundu Primary School in Nyando, Kisumu County had an unusual experience on Wednesday morning, January 6 after a boat used to ferry them got stuck in River Nyando.

The students were heading to Odienya Primary school which currently serves as an alternative ground for the students after their school was submerged.

Speaking to the Standard, one eyewitness noted that the small boat was ferrying about 20 students when it got stuck in mud.

He noted that the boat got stuck in the mud due to exceeding the number of passengers.

The school reopening exercise has been marred with numerous challenges including a lack of enough classes to implement social distancing as well as the closure of certain schools affected by natural calamities.

The incident comes after a video doing rounds on social media showing two classes taught by different teachers surfaced.

Students from Seriani school based in Baringo County were relocated to Ngambo Primary school after their school was also submerged.

The video showed two respective teachers teaching different subjects to the students within the same classroom.

The students found it hard to concentrate as the two teachers were speaking over each other.

Since schools reopened on Monday January 4, students have been required to adapt to the new normal in order to adhere to the Covid-19 regulations issued by the Ministry of Health.

Schools have resorted to learning under trees and some employed the use of tents to serve as extra spaces for learning to proceed smoothly.

Cabinet Secretary George Magoha had added that no child would be turned away due to lack of space in schools.

“The work of the parent is to bring the child to school. If there is no space, county education directors will ensure that the child is admitted where there is a vacancy,” Magoha stated.
