The schools' reopening on Monday, January 4, 2021, has seen students have to do a little differently from how they are used to.

In Seriani School based in Baringo County, PP1 and Class 8 students who had been relocated from Ngambo Primary School were forced to share a classroom after their school was submerged.

In a video seen by Kenyans.co.ke, the respective teachers of the two classes are seen at the blackboard with one teaching English and the other tutoring in religious studies.

The teachers are hardly audible speaking over each other and trying to make their students concentrate.

The two classes had to share one room due to lack of enough classes as the institution has been hosted by Seriani ECDE Centre which has only one structure.

The situation was not an isolated incident as many other schools had to find ways to hold classes with some students having their lessons under tree shades.

In other institutions such as Kisumu Boys High School employed the use of tents in the establishment of extra learning spaces for students.

However, in some areas, students weren't lucky enough to go back to their schools after the break. At least 39 schools have either been partly destroyed or entirely flooded by lake water from lakes Baringo and Bogoria whose levels increased in 2020.

Liter Girls Secondary School in Elgeyo Marakwet County was buried in landslides while Chesegon Primary School in West Pokot County was swept away by floods and landslides and will also remain closed.

Magoha added that no child would be turned away due to lack of space in any school.

"The work of the parent is to bring the child to school. If there is no space, county education directors will ensure that the child is admitted where there is a vacancy.

"If you know of a child who has gone to a government school and cannot be placed in that school, then tell us and we shall act," he stated.
