Students from 19 schools in Baringo and Kisumu county have been left stranded with their learning institutions submerged in water.

The two areas have been experiencing heavy rainfall in the past few months, a situation that has left many areas flooded.

Education Official from Baringo South, George Okeyo revealed that 11 schools in the area have been affected by the rising levels of Lake Baringo.

"The effect is massive with two secondary schools completely gone and nine primary schools also submerged in water.

"If schools were to open next week as was announced, it means the candidates of these schools will have to be placed in other schools," he said.

In Ahero, Kisumu county, Oseth Primary School is among the eight learning institutions in the area that have been left submerged by heavy rains that pounded the area.

Residents are now using boats as modes of transport with teachers asking for a directive from the government on the reopening of the schools.

"If only we can get portable tents and portable toilets so that our students can resume learning on Monday, October 12," noted one of the teachers.

Schools in Elgeyo Marakwet have also been affected by the heavy downpour that caused flash floods back in April.

Education Cabinet Secretary George Magoha, on Tuesday, October 6, announced that the Ministry of Education had settled on Monday, October 12, as the opening dates for Grade 4, Class 8 and Form Four learners.

He further revealed that KCSE and KCPE students would commence their exams in March 2021 after reopening in October.

Magoha on Wednesday, October 7 asked parents to send their children to school insisting that the government will cater for schools fees even in boarding schools.
