Mombasa Governor Hassan Ali Joho on Wednesday, January 27, offered details of an ambitious project to revamp the Ksh400million Kongowea market.
Joho stated that the county government intends to transform Kongowea market into a model market that supports export trading.
“We are also opening up feeder roads to ease movement while also improving the lighting system in order to create an enabling environment for doing business,” said Joho.
The number of stalls in the market will be increased to accommodate the influx of traders.
The market is renown as a fresh produce spot, hosting thousands of traders some of them from as far as the neighboring Tanzania.
Joho also added that his government will create a 24hour trading hub for farm produce for the benefit of the people of Mombasa County.
The governor applauded the ongoing construction works at the market while inspecting the project.
“The County Government is also fast tracking the operationalization of the materials recovery yard that will play a big role in helping us manage our waste,’’ added Joho.
Traders commended the governor adding that the move will boost their business ventures which have been affected by the pandemic.
Kongowea market is the largest market in the County of Mombasa, and remains a strategic economic asset for the coastal town.
In August 2016, President Uhuru launched the refurbished market after years of neglect.
The refurbishment of the new market is estimated to have cost the National Government approximately Sh444 Million.
