There was a snarl-up in Ngara area of Nairobi after a transformer reportedly exploded causing a fire.

A video seen by Kenyans.co.ke on Thursday, February 4, showed smoke emanating from the roundabout near the Equity Bank building.

Witnesses revealed that they heard a loud bang at the busy roundabout on the outskirts of the Central Business District (CBD).

The incident occurred around noon causing a huge snarl up along the busy highways connected to the roundabout.

Speaking to Kenyans.co.ke, a representative from Kenya Power Company noted that investigations into the incident had been launched.

It is not clear whether there were any casualties at the time of publishing this story.

The incident comes a day after the power company announced a scheduled power interruption exercise with Nairobi being among the affected areas.

The statement indicated that Runda, Jogoo Road and parts of Tassia would lose power to facilitate network maintenance.

The company, in 2020, had announced that it was involved in the transfer of power lines across Nairobi area to pave way for projects such as the Nairobi Expressway.

The exercise was carried out at a cost of Ksh1.08 billion which was met by the Kenya National Highways Authority (KENHA).

Nairobi Expressway alone involved the relocation of a combined 106 kilometres of high voltage (66kV), medium voltage (11kV), and low voltage cables as well as 28 transformers serving the area.
