Govt Announces Ksh7B Payout For 280,000 Youth - Who Qualifies?

Treasury CS Ukur Yattani has allocated Ksh7 billion to be paid to 280,000 youth who signed up for the Kazi Mtaani Programme that was rolled out by the state in 2020.

A report by Business Daily indicated that the National Treasury tabled before parliament the proposed allocation of Ksh7 billion to settle an outstanding debt as well as finance the upcoming affordable housing projects on Tuesday, February 9.

The CS indicated that the money was expected to scale the programme.

Ksh1 billion will be used to settle monies owed to the youth who took part in the programme but have not been paid for months.

The other Ksh6 billion will be used to commission new youth workers for the programme as well as fund the affordable housing project which is part of President Uhuru Kenyatta's Big Four Agenda.

"Ksh6 billion for consolidation of Kazi Mtaani Programme under the state department for Housing and Urban Development," stated the CS.

The state seeks to deliver over half a million houses before Uhuru leaves office in 2022. The state has already extended the Kazi Mtaani Programme to the end of March 2021.

The programme was created in April 2020 to help youth that had lost their jobs due to Covid-19 pandemic with each person earning Ksh560 per day while supervisors made Ksh505. The programme currently employs 280,000 individuals in 900 informal settlements across the country.

Under the program, the youth are expected to work for a maximum of 8 hours five days a week.

The program is divided into two phases. In Phase I, the maximum number of days each individual works is 22 days.

How to land the job

 

The jobs are open for both skilled and unskilled individuals expected to: 

  1. be aged between 18 and 35 years.
  2. be Kenyan citizens with valid identification cards
  3. possess a certificate of good conduct
  4. be residents of areas in which they make applications

Possessing a KCSE or KCPE certificate is an added bonus.

In the application process, personal details are required which include:

  1. Individual's name
  2. Identity Card number
  3. Telephone number
  4. Address 
  5. The cluster name and village

To apply, interested parties will be required to present their applications to the assistant chiefs of the areas in which they reside.
