Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i has announced that the government was considering extending the Kazi Mtaani Program which has benefited over 100,000 young people.
Addressing a group of beneficiaries of the project on his way to Kasarani, on Friday, December 11, Matiang'i said the government was extending the program due to the impact on communities and the youth.
He also thanked the youth for their patriotism and determination to participate in the program.
“Thank you for the good work that you are doing. I want to assure you on behalf of President Uhuru Kenyatta that we are going to extend Kazi Mataani.
“It has been very successful because I can see the environment here has been rehabilitated and we are going to rehabilitate more places,” the CS spoke amid cheers from the beneficiaries.
Matiang’i was headed to the opening of the new Kasarani Sub-county offices which he stated that it would serve residents and business people in Kasarani, Ruaraka, Githurai, and Kahawa West.
The CS was accompanied by Inspector General of Police Hillary Mutyambai, Secretary National Administration Arthur Osiya, County Commissioner Flora Mworoa and Kasarani MP Mercy Gakuya.
There was anxiety among the engaged youth that the program would be terminated following the lapse of a number of Covid-19 intervention measures introduced in April 2020.
The Kazi Mtaani initiative was rolled out to help cushion the most vulnerable but able-bodied citizens living in the informal settlements from the effects and response strategies of Covid-19.
The program ensures cleaner environments as one way of combating the ravaging Covid-19 pandemic while at the same time puts money in the pockets of the youth who are then able to fend for their families.
Currently, enlisted workers from Nairobi, Kisumu, and Mombasa earn a daily wage of Ksh 653.10 per day while workers from all other municipalities earn a daily wage of Ksh 600.00 per day.
The key activities undertaken include street cleaning or access path clearing, fumigation and disinfection, garbage collection, bush clearing, and drainage cleaning.
