Kazi Mtaani launched a new program to upgrade classrooms in schools around the country after protests marred previous projects.

Housing and Urban Development Principal Secretary (PS) Charles Hinga on Tuesday, August 18 revealed that the project is set to be enrolled in 25 counties.

"Legacy projects being undertaken by Kazi Mtaani Youths. Youths are making soil blocks using ISSB technology that will be used to construct an additional 30 classrooms at Mikuyuni Secondary School in Kibwezi.

"We are rolling out similar school projects in 25 counties," explained the Principal Secretary.

Hinga noted that plans are underway to have the project expand its reach beyond the 25 counties with training already kicking off.

He added that he is set to meet Kiambu Governor James Nyoro on Wednesday, August 19 to discuss the project of making bricks from soil to construct classrooms.

The project is set to hand schools a facelift around the country ahead of a planned reopening in January as announced by the Education Cabinet Secretary Professor George Magoha.

Some of the schools across Kenya have been destroyed by floods that hit the country in April and May, needing fresh construction.

With schools remaining closed for over half a year, some of the classrooms have been dilapidated as no maintenance has been conducted during the period.

The program will also come in handy as students will be required to social distance when learning resumes meaning that more classrooms are needed.

Kazi Mtaani is a program geared towards integrating jobless Kenyans in urban hygiene and sanitation but the initiative has been rocked by protests from youth who cited lack of payment.
