The mother of the famous Kakamega twins- Sharon Mathias and Melon Lutenyohas appealed to Kenyans of goodwill to help her clear her children's school fees.

Speaking to KTN News on Wednesday, February 17, Rosemary Khavelele said that her children were sent home over school fees, a few days before they sit their KCSE examinations on March 25, 2021.

According to the mother, Melon and Sharon have school fees arrears of 36,000 and Ksh 81,000 respectively. Their sister Mevis Mbaya also has an outstanding balance of Ksh56,000 with all arrears accumulating to Ksh173,000.

The mother lamented that she is facing a hard a time providing for the girls. She further revealed that the well-wishers who had initially pledged to help her pay for her children's fees went missing and left her stranded.

She called on Kenyans to help her settle the balance citing that her neighbours labelled her as a celebrity owing to the famed status that her children received countrywide.

The Kakamega twins saga came to light in April 2019 when the twins were reunited through Facebook after 19 years of living in separate homes.

Media reports indicated that the two were born at the Kakamega County Referral Hospital, formerly known as Kakamega Provincial General Hospital, but were separated at birth.

However, Melon was raised in Likuyani, Kakamega County while Sharon was raised in Kangemi, Nairobi. The two students would ultimately cross paths during a visit at Melon's school, Shikoti Secondary School.

Melon's classmates soon pointed out that the two looked alike. This prompted Melon to search for her "lookalike" counterpart on Facebook and sent a friend request.

The two embarked on a conversation and Melon soon planned to travel to the city to meet Sharon in Nairobi. Their story went viral on social media with Kenyans eliciting mixed reactions on the incident.

However, their guardians Rosemary Khavelele and Angeline Omina differed on their custody. A DNA test confirmed that the two were biological twins and the mothers agreed to settle the matter out of court. Rosemary and Angeline agreed on allowing the three girls to visit Angeline in Nairobi during the school holidays.
