Police are investigating circumstances under which a woman identified as Fridah Kendi Karugu was conned a sum of Ksh300,000 by a fraudster in order to secure a spot for her daughter at Alliance High School.

The suspect Annald Ongwenyi was nabbed and put in custody by the Director of Criminal Investigations (DCI) as they probe into the matter.

“The complainant herein Frida Kendi Karugu wanted her daughter to join Alliance Girls High school and the suspect promised that he was able to assist her to join the said school and there he demanded Sh500,000,” said an affidavit filed in Court.

According to detective Charles Macharia, the suspect was given Ksh300,000 in cash and another Ksh15,000 via M-PESA.

Ongwenyi allegedly posed as an employee of the Ministry of Education as he defrauded Fridah.

The accused is being charged for obtaining money by false pretense and will be in custody for four days to assist in the investigation of the case.

The detectives further noted that they would visit the national school to confirm if the letters and signatures were from the school administration.

Macharia has already obtained orders at Makadara Law Courts to detain the suspect.

The fraud case was reported at Embakasi police station on February 12, 2021.

Recently, Education CS George Magoha said that he will punish all school heads who were raising school fees and extorting parents with ridiculous charges.

"They should desist before we expose and punish them," Magoha said while addressing the media at Embu County Primary School on Friday, January 15.
