Celebrated Kenyan comic Elsa Majimbo has been awarded by the Forbes Magazine alongside revered former Liberian President Johnson Sirleaf.

The award, which was given to eight women on Tuesday, March 9, was meant to recognize high-achieving women on the African continent.

Majimbo was recognized as the African entertainer of the year while another Kenyans, Athlete Hellen Obiri, took the Sports award.

Sirleaf, on the other hand, received the Lifetime Achievement Award which was determined by the Forbes Women Africa Leading Women Summit.

The winners were unveiled during a two day summit hosted by the multi-national publishing company which was dubbed  Africa Reloaded: The Power of The Collective.

The awards are meant to celebrate African women who inspire confidence through rewriting the narrative as well leaders who advocate positive change and are committed to economic and social transformation on the continent.

Forbes Africa and Forbes Woman Africa managing editor Renuka Methil noted that the awardees had been instrumental in their respective fields especially during Covid-19 pandemic.

“I’d like to congratulate all the 2021 award winners for being such incredible leaders in their respective fields, particularly after such a tumultuous year.

“This year we adapted to a completely online format, and while we do miss the face-to-face interaction, the digital space gave us the opportunity to expand the Leading Woman Summit footprint and reach a much bigger audience," she stated.

Majimbo rose to fame during the pandemic courtesy of her comic strips that went viral on social media. She has appeared on global media houses including Teen Vogue cover and CNN.

Her star has continued to rise after Superstar musician Beyonce Knowles recognized her as one of the women who inspire.

“For those who created their own way to tell their stories, found other avenues to get to the destinations, and broke every rule in the process, We see you! We salute each and every one of you on this International Women’s Day,” stated Beyonce after nominating her and 12 others.

Sirleaf on the other hand, was hailed as the first ever elected female president on the African Continent and was praised for upholding peace in the country.
