Update 5pm
The prime suspect in the murder of a 24-year-old woman Velvine Nungari Kinyanjui was arrested on Thursday, March 18, and will remain in police custody for 10 days.
In a ruling made virtually by detectives Kiambu Law Court 1 Chief Magistrate Hon. Patriciah Gichohi, she stated that the time will enable detectives to piece up the evidence and complete investigations surrounding her death.
Nungari's story was shared widely the better part of Thursday evening, with Kenyans demanding justice be served.
Kenyans on social media have demanded the security forces to act after it emerged that a 24-year-old woman succumbed to injuries imposed on her by a suspected lover.
Velvine Nungari Kinyanjui is said to have died at the Kenyatta Teaching and Referral Hospital (KTRH) days after she met her lover who allegedly raped and broke her spine.
"She was a waitress at a hotel and on the night she was found injured, she and a client agreed to meet up for drinks after her shift. She was supposed to be joined by a friend but the friend cancelled," reads an excerpt of a statement from one of her friends.
The next day, Nungari's friend is said to have tried to reach her on phone to no success. It is then that she embarked on a journey to the hotel where her friend was meeting the client.
"They went to the room and found her on a bed unconscious. They rushed her to hospital and it was ascertained that she was broken and her spinal cord broken. She also had other injuries," the friend added.
The matter has since been reported to the Kiamumbi police under the OB number 59/24/02/2021.
Angered by the narrations, Kenyans have called on authorities to ensure that justice is served and the perpetrator is brought to book.
The Kenya Human Rights Commission (KHRC) has asked the Directorate of Criminal Investigation (DCI) and the Office of the Inspector General of police to ensure justice is served.
"You have a duty to identify this person and he be brought in for questioning," the commission stated.
In previous instances, social media has acted as a double-edged sword which can be used either positively or negatively as more Kenyans express themselves online.
In Nungari's case, social media has also been used to piece together her last moments as she blogged her dinner date through Snapchat and Whatsapp status.
The story of Nungari acts as just one of the many cases that have caused an uproar online.
At the time of publishing, it was not clear whether authorities had caught up with the perpetrator or not.
