President Uhuru Kenyatta has nominated Professor Fatuma Chege as a Principal Secretary under the Ministry of Education.
National Assembly Speaker Justin Muturi informed Parliament about the nomination on Tuesday, March 23.
“I wish to report to the House that I have received a message from His Excellency the President conveying his nomination of Prof. Fatuma Nyaguthii Chege for appointment as a Principal Secretary in the newly created State Department for Implementation of Curriculum Reforms under the Ministry of Education,” said speaker Muturi.
“His Excellency the President, having exercised his powers under Article 155(3)(a) of the Constitution, is now seeking the approval of the National Assembly on the appointment of Prof. Fatuma Chege as a Principal Secretary for the aforementioned State Department," he added.
Speaker Muturi mandated the Education Committee chaired by Busia MP Florence Mutua to vet the appointee and report back to the House by April 15, 2021.
Prof Chege is a professor of Education and immediate former Dean, School of Education at Kenyatta University. She holds a Doctoral Degree in Education with a specialization in Gender & Education from the University of Cambridge - (UK). She has a professional career spanning all levels of the Kenyan education system.
She teaches Philosophy & Sociology of Education; Educational Research Methods and Gender and Education. She also has considerable experience in multi-disciplinary & participatory research in Sub-Sahara Africa.
Prof Chege spearheaded the Curriculum Review Task Force formed by Education CS George Magoha on the transition from the 8-4-4 system to the 2-6-3-3 Competency-Based Curriculum.
The team was tasked to advise on the policy as well as legal issues that are required to be undertaken for the curriculum to be effectively implemented. They were also authorized to discuss the working relationship between the national and county governments on the implementation of the pre-primary education curriculum.
