Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i presided over the groundbreaking ceremony of the ultra-modern security command centre which will transform the police service.
Speaking at the construction site at Konza Technopolis on March 29, CS Matiang’i described the facility as a major milestone towards setting the policing standards in Kenya and the region.
“The ultra-modern Centre will form the welcome and entrance part of the technology hub, and will feature a police station, a security barrier, a fire station, and an emergency response unit,” the Ministry Interior said in a statement.
The CS was also accompanied by his ICT counterpart Joe Mucheru whose ministry is crucial in the actualisation of the Konza Technopolis dream.
“Technology adoption has impacted the way people go about everyday life activities and commit crimes. We must also adopt and integrate new technologies into our operations as this is the police service of the
future,” CS Matiang'i during the event.
It has been seven years since the Konza Technopolis, popularly known as Konza City was launched and construction commenced.
In May 2020, CS Mucheru announced that the newly built National Data Center (Phase I -Containerized) at Konza was ready for use.
Phase II is expected to be completed in 2021 as a tier III national data centre, with smart city facilities and services to support Konza Technopolis, e-government as well as small and medium enterprises and services (SME’S).
In September 2020, the Korean EXIM Bank committed Ksh94 million to fund a feasibility study for the development of a media city at the Konza Metropolis.
TV broadcasting, animation and gaming, filming and photography, and ICT programming were pointed as the main components of the digital media city.
One of the already completed projects is The Konza Complex, which features an office block, a conference facility and a hotel block.
The office block comprises a 9-storey building with 2 basements. The building has adhered to green building standards and has incorporated the latest smart building technologies and intelligence; hence will be heralded as a smart green building.
Kenya Railways has already rehabilitated the railway line leading to Konza City and made the maiden trip which was officiated by CS Mucheru and John Tanui, the CEO of Konza Technopolis Development Authority (KoTDA).
