Education Cabinet Secretary George Magoha on Tuesday, April 6, confronted a journalist over his comments on the ongoing Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) examinations.
The unidentified journalist had asked the CS to comment on the rising cases of irregularities in the ongoing KCSE exams.
A fuming Magoha did not take too kindly the journalist’s question, and wondered if he (journalist) had a good understanding of the English language.
“What do you mean notorious? This man doesn’t understand English. There is nothing that has happened,” the CS said.KCSE students sitting the national examFile
The CS who was speaking to journalists at the end of day 6 of KCSE explained that he is the one who had opened the examination container at that centre where he was briefing the media.
He went ahead and asked the journalist to tell him if he had seen any signs of safety breach.
Magoha directed the journalist to conduct additional research before making superficial claims that could create tension among candidates, parents and other education stakeholders.
“Can you go back to your data? You will find that this is a very good year. Do you get the point? He added.
He further said that there were only fewer than 20 individuals arrested so far, and that could not entirely be termed as multiple irregularities.
During the first week of the 2021 KCSE, 18 people were arrested for selling fake examination papers to unknowing candidates and parents.
Similarly, 8 candidates from various centres were reported to have been found with mobile phones inside the examination rooms.
The latest arrest related to KCSE irregularities was made on Tuesday April 6.
A school principal who is also a chief national examiner was arrested for sharing a KCSE mathematics paper on her Whatsapp status.
Betta Mutuku was arrested by the Machakos DCIO Rhodah Kanyi and her phone confiscated.
