Property worth millions was on Friday, April 23, razed down in Misikhu, Bungoma County.
Aggrieved residents explained that they first noticed the smoke and switched off all electric appliances before the fire started spreading to other rooms.
"There were so many expensive items that had been stored in rooms that caught fire leading people to experience loses," a local stated.
Locals faulted firefighters for not responding swiftly when called to put out the fire. They used buckets of water, twigs, and soil in an attempt to put out the fire and prevent it from spreading to the nearby buildings.
"Had the firefighters come to the scene on time, some of the items would have been salvaged," another resident indicated.
Fortunately, there are no reported deaths or injuries. At the time of publishing, the cause of the fire had not yet been established.
Weeks ago, a number of businesses were destroyed in Nairobi's Kariobangi estate following a fire incident.
The fire is suspected to have been caused by an electrical fault in one of the establishments.
In a previous interview, a County Director of County Fire and Rescue Services disclosed that electrical faults, cooking equipment, cigarettes, domestic violence and improvised lanterns were the major causes of fire outbreaks.
"Illegal tapping of electricity and lose connections, and the use of adulterated fuel in their paraffin stoves are the leading causes of infernos in the slums," he conveyed.
