Kang'ata Decries Ksh500K Salary Loss

Murang’a Senator Irungu Kang’ata on Wednesday, May 5, stated that he is yet to come to terms with the loss of Ksh500,000 as part of the salary that he earned as the Senate Majority Whip. 

Kang’ata who was ousted from his special position in the Senate in February 2021 also lost the privileges of being driven in a government-issued car and many bodyguards.

“I lost my many bodyguards, allowances totaling Ksh 500,000 per month, and a GK vehicle. Even me [sic] I am yet to understand. I think Tanga Tanga has some magic,” he posted on his Twitter.

He was responding to claims that he had become Gatundu MP Moses Kuria's personal assistant since joining Deputy President William Ruto’s camp.

The privileges and allowances Kang’ata enjoyed were bestowed on Kiambu Senator Kimani Wamatangi who replaced him as Senate Majority Whip.

Leaders in Parliament enjoy hefty pay packages including allowances, from committee heads all the way to both speakers Justin Muturi (National Assembly) and Ken Lusaka (Senate).

According to documents from the Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC), Muturi and Lusaka each take home a gross salary of Ksh1.155 million excluding allowances.

Deputy Speakers Moses Cheboi (National Assembly) and Margaret Kamar (Senate) are paid a gross salary of Ksh924,000.

Majority and minority leaders of both houses (Amos Kimunya and Samuel Poghisio) and (John Mbadi and James Orengo) each take home Ksh765,188. 

Other Members of Parliament are entitled to a Ksh621,250 gross salary every month. 

Heads of Departmental Committees earn Ksh8,000 per committee sitting which translates to about Ksh128,000 a month for a maximum of 16 sittings. 

Other members of the committees get Ksh5,000 which adds up to a maximum of Ksh80,000.
