Battle lines were drawn in the National Assembly on Thursday, May 6, when MPs voted on the Constitution Amendment Bill 2020.
Voting started a few minutes to 6pm and encompassed members who were present in the chambers and those who participated via Zoom.
South Mugirango MP Silvanus Osoro risked his vote being cancelled after appearing for the session with a multitude of constituents on the video teleconference.
He was forced to step away from the gathering and request the speaker for another chance to cast his vote.Bahati MP Kimani Ngunjiri addresses a gathering in Nakuru County on Wednesday, January 6, 2021
Coordinating the voting of the over 50 MPs who were appearing on Zoom proved to be a hard task for Speaker Justin Muturi.
Lag, echoing, and feedback made it difficult to hear some of the members as others were heard engaging in private conversations after forgetting to mute their microphones.
As had been expected, allies of President Uhuru Kenyatta and ODM leader Raila Odinga dominated the yes side.
Deputy President William Ruto’s allies such as Soy MP Caleb Kositany led the no team.
In a rather surprising turn of events, Bahati MP Kimani Ngunjiri a sharp critic of President Kenyatta and a Ruto ally voted in support of the Bill.
After MPs voted to pass the Constitution Amendment Bill 2020, Kenyans will have to wait for the Senate to vote on the document before proceeding to a referendum.
