President Uhuru Kenyatta during his tour of Gem in Siaya constituency on Sunday, May 30, made a stopover at a house for a photo-op.
During the visit where he had launched a water project, two young girls in the homestead took the opportunity to get the head of state to pay their school fees.
As he engaged the family in small talk, he asked the girls how they were doing in school, the girls highlighted that raising fees was a challenge for their family.
"We are doing fine sir, but we have a problem in school fees," they stated. Kenyatta immediately declared he would settle their school fees.
He added that he would sponsor them up to the point they completed their education.
The girls, one in Class 7 added that she wanted to be a pilot when she grew up while her younger sister in class 6 revealed that she would venture into medicine.
The family expressed their gratitude for the gesture by the head of state as the photographers snapped more photos of them.
Uhuru noted that the Siaya Bondo water project, funded by the Government and the African Development Bank (AfDB), had raised the volume of freshwater supply to the towns by rehabilitating and expanding the Sidindi Malanga processing plant.
The project, whose construction began in November 2013 and ended in December 2018, also involved the construction of sewer treatment facilities in Siaya and Bondo towns.
According to Lake Victoria Water Works Development, the water project implementer, the objective was to improve access, availability, and sustainability of water supply and wastewater services in the fast-expanding Siaya and Bondo towns.
Further, the water supply project sought to improve the quality of life of the people, catalyze commercial activities, drive economic growth, and build resilience against climate change.
"All these projects you are seeing us commissioning are as a result of peace and unity, and I won't stop appreciating my brother because of the handshake.
"The fruits of peace are development, the fruits of peace are opportunities and eliminating poverty and lack amongst our people and that’s why we are asking you to support BBI," the President noted.
