A traffic snarl-up was witnessed on Outer Ring Road over an accident involving a petroleum tanker that spilt oil near the Mutindwa footbridge on Thursday night, June 4.
Motorists were left stranded on the road as traffic police and Nairobi County firefighters cleared the oil from the highway.
The team sprayed water and foam at high pressure to reduce the chances of the oil and the tanker busting into flames.
The spill stretched all the way from Allsops on Thika road to the Airport North Road junction.
A matatu that was unaware of the oil spillage overturned after the driver waded into the accident scene.
Several other vehicles were also reported to have rolled over after driving into the slippery road.
A video seen by Kenyans.co.ke showed area residents and the firefighters saving the commuters from the PSV.
No deaths were reported from the matatu accident. It was, however, reported that a number of the passengers incurred minor injuries.
Police advised motorists to use alternative routes whereas those stranded on the highway were asked to wait for clearance.
Motorists and on-lookers, nonetheless, raised questions as to why the relevant authorities delayed cleaning the road since the accident occurred past midnight.
They also raised concerns on the lateness of emergency service providers as residents frantic efforts to rescue injured passengers could escalate injuries.
