The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) on Friday, June 11, issued a statement following an incident where a form three student drilled a nail into a principal's head.
In the statement, TSC condemned the incident and raised concerns on the rising cases of unwarranted violence towards teachers.
Further, the Commission called upon all necessary stakeholders to ensure that schools are safe for conducive learning and teaching.
"We must all work to stop violence in schools. TSC is determined to ensure that teachers are able to deliver on their duties," reads an excerpt of the statement.
Their statement was reiterated by the Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) secretary general Wilson Sossion, who expressed concerns about students exhibiting criminal behaviour.
Sossion stated that the indiscipline cases had been on the rise following the seven-month Covid-19 break.
"The truth of the matter is that students staying out for a long time, many of them engaged in drugs and such a case may be connected to drugs and substance abuse," he stated.
"We have to develop new measures of managing students. If we don't, we will end up having many teachers being accosted. That is a criminal assault which no person whether a minor or another should engage in," he added.
The student from Ainamoi Secondary School took a wooden plank with a projected nail and hit the principal, Geoffrey Rono, on the head.
The principal was rushed to a dispensary nearby and is currently recuperating at his home.
Following an increase in indiscipline cases in schools, Education CS George Magoha reintroduced caning back in January 2021.
