"Sometime last year, Mount Kenya University (MKU) launched a new program to tackle mental health issues among its students and youth in society," the statement read in part.

The second year student, who was studying Community Development in the Institution, was stabbed severally on various parts of her body before the suspect disappeared.

She was rushed to the Thika Level 5 Hospital where she succumbed to her injuries while being attended to.

Muthengei's friends who were in her company when the traumatising incident happened narrated that they the assailant was calm and none of them suspected that he had an ulterior motive.

“He entered our room and calmly asked where the deceased was. He looked and acted polite and none of us could suspect he could be having an ill motive. In fact, some of us thought he was a classmate to the deceased," one of the friends stated.

The assailant is said to have posed; "you thought I could no longer find you. You have been cheating on me."

It is afterwards that he drew his weapon and stabbed the student.

“We are very lucky he did not turn the knife to us. After stabbing our friend and roommate thoughtlessly, he opened the door and vanished into the dark,” another friend stated.

Muthengi's friends have since asked the police to speed up investigations and bring the suspect to book.
