Kenya has found itself at the centre of a diplomatic crisis after it was accused of secretly arresting a Nigerian politician who is wanted for leading a group declared as a banned militia group by the Federal Government of Nigeria.

Nnamdi Kanu grabbed international news on Tuesday, June 29, after he was presented at a Nigerian Court - four years after he fled the country.

Authorities in the West African country initially claimed that Kanu was arrested and extradited from the United Kingdom where he also has citizenship status.

However, the UK government denied having anything to do with the arrest of the man who leads an outlawed group that calls for the independence of Biafra from Nigeria.

Kanu's brother Kingsley has now alleged that the Nigerian leader was headed to his Kenyan home in Kileleshwa, Nairobi when he was stopped for questioning by officials at JKIA.

He threatened that the family would sue Kenya.

"We will hold Kenyan and Nigerian government responsible for whatever may happened to my brother. We don't know why they did this to him. It is an incident of extraordinary rendition," Kingsley stated.

Kingsley, who is a resident of Germany, added that the family was in talks with a number of lawyers to know the way forward including suing Kenya.

Speaking to Kenyans.co.ke, Foreign Affairs PS Kamau Macharia stated that there was no evidence that Kanu was in the Country.

The Biafra leader was on Tuesday, June 29, presented before the Federal High Court of Abuja.

"Nnamdi Kanu has been intercepted. He has been brought back to Nigeria in order to continue facing trial after disappearing," Justice Minister Abubakar Malam said.

On his part, Kanu's lawyer Nnemeka Ojeifor was aggrieved that his client was arraigned in court without his lawyers

"If they want justice, they know Nnamdi Kanu has lawyers. I am one of the lawyers. Why was he brought to court without informing us? How can they arraign him without telling his lawyers? This is totally unacceptable, unconstitutional," Ojeifor told DW.

The issue came weeks after a Nairobi-based Turkish billionaire, Selahaddin Gulen was abducted while heading to the DCI headquarters along Kiambu Road and flown back to Turkey.

Selahaddin was accused of being a member of the outlawed Fetullah Terrorist Organisation (FETO) and was accused of orchestrating a failed military coup in Turkey in 2016.
