Just who was Ann Wanjiru Waiganjo, the Karen Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) boss who perished after a send-off party held for her colleague at the Baita Restaurant in Upper Hill?

It has emerged that she was the younger sister of the now-infamous police impersonator Joshua Waiganjo who posed as the assistant commissioner of police and would go around hiring and sacking police officers during his run.

Ann's first dalliance with the limelight came in 2019 when she was accused of the crime of bigamy -being married to two different men at the same time.

Her first husband, David Murimi too is a police officer and an inspector. Her second husband, David Mbitu Muchi, whom she left Murimi for is a junior prisons officer.

While still married to Murimi, Ann and Muchi reportedly exchanged their vows at a ceremony that was attended by many top Kenyan police officers. When put to task to explain why she had done so, she claimed that Murimi was physically abusive and she had an O/B number and police report supporting her claims as she had reported the matter to Kikuyu Police Station.

Ann however decided not to press charges against Murimi as she didn't want to bring the police service under negative scrutiny.

She did however agree to pursue a divorce from her first husband though this allegedly opened her up to career-targeted threats. And as she contemplating dropping the matter in favour of a more private resolution, the courts ruled on the matter granting her request.

As earlier stated, according to a report by K24, the officer collapsed at around 5.39 pm while attending senior police officer, SSP Henry Kiambata's party at Baita restaurant.

The report was filed by SCCIO Lang'ata, Abdirashid Yakub.

“On July 3, 2021 at around 1739hrs duty officer Capitol Hill received a report from SCCIO Langata, Mr Abdirashid Yakub, that one No.235389 CI (w) Ann Wanjiru Waiganjo the Officer in charge DCI Karen suddenly collapsed while at Baita Restaurant within Upper Hill,”  part of the report read.

Ann was pronounced dead on arrival at Nairobi Hospital.
