Murang’a Governor Mwangi Wa Iria's Usawa Kwa Wote campaign truck on Sunday, July 4, caught fire during a public event.

The truck, which was being used in a membership recruitment drive in the county burst into flames in unclear circumstances causing uproar among attendees of the function.

Wa Iria launched his presidential bid with the belief that the GEMA community of Gikuyu, Embu, and Meru would be enough to win the 2022 elections as the community has a population of 10 million potential voters.

Earlier this year, Governor Mwangi dwelled on the point that President Uhuru Kenyatta and Deputy President William Ruto won with over seven million votes from Mt Kenya communities.

He added that being a senior leader from the region makes him a potential winner of the 2022 elections if the GEMA community of 10 million voters back him.

Governor Mwangi earlier this year warned anyone who did not take his bid seriously saying in part, that

"Nobody should undermine us in saying we need to support so and so...as a community, we have the numbers, we have the will, we have the capacity."

The governor went on to say that those who want to partner with him should partner with him, genuinely, stressing that he will not play second fiddle to anyone.

He has also been very vocal in warning any of his adversaries who think of him as an underdog.

Governor Iria also warned politicians who plan on visiting his County without any positive intentions of contributing to his agenda of uniting GEMA people, saying his community of voters is not up for auction.

Iria hopes to give the political giants in the form of Ruto and Raila Odinga, a run for their money in the 2022 elections but many say that his political ambitions are predicated on hopefulness.

He was elected as Governor on the March 4, 2013 and subsequently in August 2017 for his second term.
