Police in Nakuru County have arrested five people suspected to be part of a gang that murdered a truck driver ferrying goods along the Naivasha-Mai Mahiu Highway.

The five were found in possession of bales of flour stolen from a truck. They are suspected to have killed the truck driver before making away with goods worth Ksh1.8 million.

Naivasha Directorate of Criminal Investigation boss Adan Hassan revealed that they launched an ambush after receiving credible leads from residents about the theft.

They caught up with the first suspect in Mai Mahiu on Saturday, July 3 before proceeding to Njoro and Nakuru to arrest the others.

"The suspects were in possession of Wheat Flour matching the batch number of the stolen bales," said  Mr.Hassan.

DCIO Hassan stated the gang offloaded 600 bales at the Kamundura area before the remaining consignment was dropped at the Maai Mahiu area.

The gang hijacked the driver at Salama, gaining access to the truck through the passenger door which was unlocked.

Police suspect that they killed the driver, who attempted to fight back around Mlolongo or Kamandura.

Their intention was to drive towards Naivasha only to find that the roads had been closed to pave way for the World Rally Championships.

He termed the arrest as a breakthrough in the fight against highway robberies, which have caused panic among truck drivers.

Truck Drivers Association Chairman David Masinde earmarked the Naivasha-Mai Mahiu Highway, Bachuma, Manyatta Area  Makindu, and Maunga as dangerous spots.
