Kenya Revenue Authority honoured the Interior Ministry with the top public sector taxpayer award on Wednesday, July, 14.
Cabinet Secretary Dr Fred Matiang'i termed the move as an "all of government" approach with the Minister also recognizing the work done by his juniors.
The Ministry of Interior and Coordination of National Government expressed its gratitude for the recognition which was given to it for complying with tax payments and paying the highest amount of taxes among all government entities.
"On behalf of my colleagues from @InteriorKE, Thank you @KRACorporate for honouring us with the Top Public Sector Agency Award 2020. Yet another confirmation of the success of all of the government approaches in working to build a true spirit to support GoK and country," CS Matiang'i stated.
"It's such an exceptional honour to be recognized by KRA as the Top Public Sector Agency in 2020 for being the most tax compliant and paying the highest amount of taxes among all government entities. We will strive to surpass ourselves and continue leading by example," the Ministry responded.
Last week an evaluation report carried out by the Public Service Performance Management and Monitoring Unit (PSPMMU) named the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries overseen by Cabinet Secretary Peter Munya as the worst-performing.
CS Joe Mucheru's ICT Ministry, CS Amina Mohammed's Ministry of Sports and the Ministry of Tourism and Wildlife led by CS Najib Balala were among the bottom three.
However, the Nation reported that the National Treasury was ranked as the best performing Ministry by PSPMMU. Ministry of East African Community and Regional Development and the Ministry of Water, Sanitation and Irrigation were ranked among the top three best-performing Ministries.
The Education ministry headed by CS George Magoha was ranked sixth. Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) has been keen on collecting taxes from all entities. The taxman was given the go-ahead to auction Kenya Power transformers over delays to clear taxes for the import of the transformers and warehouse charges.
KRA gave Kenya Power until August 12, 2021, to ensure all taxes are cleared failure to which the auction will commence.
“Unless the under-mentioned goods are entered and removed from the Customs Warehouse within thirty (30) days from the date of this notice, they will be sold by public auction on August 12, 2021,” KRA stated.
The taxman has been aggressive in ensuring all entities in Kenya pay their dues on time. Last week Kakamega Governor Wycliffe Opranya pleaded with the National Treasury to intervene and solve a tax standoff.
He lamented that the Kenya Ports Authority had declined to release life-saving machines over a huge accrued tax bill.
