The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) on Sunday, July 18 dispatched detectives from its homicide unit to Elgeyo Marakwet to unravel the mysterious death of fugitive police constable Caroline Kangogo.

This is after a number of holes were poked in the suicide theory by police who discovered Kangogo's lifeless body in a bathroom in her parents' compound in Elgeyo Marakwet on Friday, July 16.

Speaking to the media, Rift Valley Regional Commissioner George Natembeya revealed that Kangogo committed suicide shortly after arriving at her parents' compound in Nyawa village.

"She, however, did not get inside the house and at around 7 am, she got into the bathroom and killed herself," Natembeya expounded.

The majority of Kenyans believed that her death was a targetted hit by the elite multi-agency team tasked with hunting down Kangogo who was marked not only as a fugitive but also armed and dangerous.

The team comprising the police, military and DCI officers promised to unearth Kangogo within a week. Kangogo was found in her parents' bathroom and pronounced dead by police officers on the fourth day of the said week.

While speaking from her hideout on July 15, Kangogo reached out to the agency and gave conditions for her surrender. She stated that she did not want to be detained in any police station as she feared for her life.

The detectives will also study a draft SMS found in a feature phone believed to have been a suicide note written by the deceased policewoman.

Kangogo was the prime suspect in the murders of constable John Ogweno and businessman Peter Ndwiga who were killed on July 4 and July 5 respectively.

In her suicide note, Kangogo left instructions to her parents and brother on how to take care of her children. She asked for forgiveness from Ogweno's family, for killing the man she referred to as the love of her life.

However, Kangogo justified Ndwiga's murder accusing him of allegedly refusing to pay her Ksh1.5 million that he allegedly owed her.

"For Peter Njiru Ndwiga, I don't owe anyone an apology. He conned me Ksh1.5 million whereby Ksh300,000 I borrowed from my father's retirement benefits," read the message.

Through their family spokesperson, Kangogo's kin expressed their remorse to the kin of two and asked for forgiveness.
