A KCPE candidate who was willing to sell her kidney in order to raise her secondary school fees, has finally received help.
Marriet Achieng, a former pupil at Chetoto Primary School, Kitale, scored 404 marks out of the possible 500 marks in the national exam. However, her relatives could not raise the school fees needed for her to join Turkana Girls High School.
Her uncle, Douglas Omondi, stated that Achieng felt stranded due to financial constraints. He added that Achieng's mother was a hairdresser while her father was not in the picture.
The financial woes forced the girl to device a method to raise the requisite fee including the idea of selling her kidney.
The bright and needy student aspires to become a cardiologist in the future.
Her plight was noticed by the Joseph Pepela Foundation which aided in sponsoring her through the four year education cycle.
"We met with Omondi who stated that his niece was stranded due to fees. She had already received an admission letter to Turkana Girls High School. Since she had not reported, she did not know her fate."
"So we decided to come in immediately because this was a student who was so desperate and willing to do anything, including selling her kidney," Pepela told Kenyans.co.ke
The Foundation, however, did not get her admitted to her initial school but secured a slot at St Mary’s Girls in Bomet.
"The Principal, Sister Mary Gabriel, accepted, and we secured Achieng's admission to the school," added Pepela.
All Achieng's expenses will be catered for including uniforms and other personal effects.
