Two police officers, implicated in a robbery incident, reportedly opened fire at residents in Nandi County while scampering for safety.

According to a police report under OB number 08/03//08/2021, the duo was among four men who stormed a shop belonging to a civilian and alleged to be searching for counterfeit goods.

The shop owner claimed that the two other men posed as government agents. According to lead detectives, the two officers were attached at Turbo Police Station, Uasin Gishu County.

"They never got the goods and later handcuffed him (the shop owner) who claimed that he was robbed Ksh160,000," part of the report read.

Members of the public rushed to the shopkeeper's rescue after he raised an alarm. This led to a standoff between the men and the residents that lasted for hours.

The officers escaped from the mob that was baying for their blood after they opened fire and sought refuge at Chepterwai Police Station.

Nandi Sub-County Police Commander intervened and calmed the agitated crowd which was demanding justice for the shop owner.

"The police boss visited Chepterwai Police Station and spoke with the two police officers and the two civilians, who were by then under detention," read part of the report.

Police seized a Toyota Noah the suspects allegedly wanted to use as a gateway car while the two officers were reportedly disarmed off their rifles.

Several rounds of ammunition, empty cartridges, jungle jackets, and name tags were recovered.

The two men, who posed as counterfeit agents, were found with Ksh19,230 and Ksh3,150 respectively that were also seized as exhibits.

Investigations into the matter commenced. The two officers were transferred to Kabiyet Police Station to record statements.
