A female constable attached to the Gilgil Weighbridge Police Station along the Ngong-Suswa road accidentally shot dead her colleague during a police chase with a lorry driver who had resisted arrest.

According to a police report, O/B 3/22/8/2021 filed on Sunday, August 22, Emma Sopiato and her colleagues, inside a Toyota Hilux Double Cabin vehicle, were hot on the heels of the lorry driver after he refused to stop despite being given an order.

This led to a police chase between the two vehicles. Upon reaching Kimuka trading centre, the driver stopped and began reversing the lorry in a bid to hit the police vehicle.

"The female officer who was seated at the back right of the driver discharged her rifle, an AK 47, which hit corporal Fanuel Abongo, a colleague on the right side of the ribs and exited through the left side of the ribs," read part of the OB report.

Abongo was soon rushed to Ngong Sub-county hospital and was later referred to Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) for specialized treatment.

Unfortunately, the victim was pronounced dead on arrival. Detectives privy to the investigations affirmed that the matter was still under investigation.

According to the report, the rifle used in the incident has been kept at the armoury and the suspect has been placed in custody.

Cases of police officers shooting their colleagues to death have been a subject of discussion in the recent past.

Similarly, the late Corporal Caroline Kangogo also made headlines when she was suspected of fatally shooting her colleague John Ogweno inside Kasarani police station based in Nakuru on Monday, July 5.

Kangogo was later found dead at her parents homestead eleven days later with a Ceska pistol beside her body on Friday, July 16.
