Police on Tuesday, August 24, disrupted the burial service of Mahoo Ward Member of County Assembly (MCA), the Late Ronald Sagurani in Taita Taveta County.

The officers brought down tents and kicked out mourners who had attended the burial service ahead of Deputy President William Ruto's arrival at the scene.

Ruto travelled to Taveta for the service after the completion of his meeting with grassroots leaders and political leaders from Makueni County, held on Tuesday morning, August 24, at his Karen residence in Nairobi County.

He apologized to the family of the deceased for the earlier disruptions at the event, stating that the event was pre-marred with 'small political issues'.

"I am apologizing to you the family for what transpired earlier. I want to ask for forgiveness on behalf of the Government as a government leader, for the unnecessary disruption. When Government does things that annoy the public, I have a duty to take responsibility," he stated in an apology to the family of the deceased.

The DP's allies also reacted to the disruption, terming it a move by the deep state to frustrate Ruto.

Malindi MP Aisha Jumwa condemned the government for selectively applying directives on burial attendance, which limits the number of attendants to 100 people.

"The government has to apply the rules across the board and not select which burials to apply the government directives," said Jumwa.

Kiharu MP Ndindi Nyoro took to his social media to blame the disruption of the event to the frustration by Ruto's competitors after the Kimbaa Constituency by-election loss.

"Police under instructions from above have disrupted and brought down tents at the burial service of Mahoo Ward MCA, the Late Hon Ronald Sagurani just because the DP William Ruto was to attend. Machungu ya Kiambaa na BBI iko mingi ( our competitors are angry about the loss in Kiambaa),"  Nyoro remarked.

Sagurani died on Tuesday, August 17, while undergoing treatment at Pandya Hospital in Mombasa for Covid-19 related complications.

The deceased became the fourth MCA in Taita Taveta County to die in office in the last two years. He was serving a second term in office.
