A 60-year-old woman on Tuesday, August 24, chained herself at the County Government of Nyandarua offices protesting failure by the county to pay her Ksh78 million.

Hannah Ndugire, accused the county government of failing to remit her payment despite completing street paving works in Ol Kalou.

According to Ndugire, she carried out cabro paving on a two-kilometre footpath in Ol Kalou township.

She stated that her financial woes deepened after she defaulted on the loans taken in order to fund the project.

"A teachers’ Sacco, from where I obtained a substantial amount in credit, will advertise my home in Ol Kalou for auction this week," she stated.

"I think these people are exposing me to all these sufferings because I am a woman."

Passers-by, who sympathised with her situation, joined her in pressuring the county government to honour its part of the bargain.

“The work she did in this town at Ksh65 million is worth Ksh130 million as per County Quantity Surveyor’s opinion, and she deserves to be paid,” one Nyandarua resident told the media.

The elderly woman said that she has been forced to sell some of her assets to offset payments owed to other people.

“In addition to the loans, I have sold most of my properties, including land, to pay employees who are mostly women and also settle part of the loans."

The claims were, however, disputed by the County Executive for Industrialization, Raphael Njui, who intimated that he was not aware of any pending bills owed to the woman.

"I am not aware of any pending bills for her because I have not seen any invoice from her. Ask her if she has invoiced the county government for any work she did,” she stated.
