Fresh details have now emerged about the terror suspects who were dramatically arrested in Likoni, Mombasa on August 23.

A 35-year-old man who was among those arrested in the operation that caught commuters unawares is now reported to be a Tanzanian national.

While confirming the reports on Friday, August 27, Tanzania's High Commissioner to Kenya, John Simbachawene said they are still investigating to establish if the terror suspect is indeed Tanzanian.

Additionally, Simbachawene said the embassy is keenly following up on the matter before releasing the official report.

“It is true that there is a case of suspects who were arrested and one of them is alleged to be Tanzanian,” he said.

Simbachawene further added: “We want to shed light to the allegations that he is Tanzanian, more so because there are some rumours that he’s a citizen of yet another country.”

After their arrests, police officers recovered two AK-47 rifles, phones and ammunition from the boot of their Toyota Probox.

However, it was reported that two other terror suspects narrowly evaded the arrest. Police launched a manhunt for them, raiding several homes in Mombasa during the operation, but in vain.

The duo was believed to be accomplices to the two suspects who were apprehended at the Likoni ferry crossing point.

One of the suspects had allegedly been arrested in 2016 and faced terror-related charges. He was released on bond and the case collapsed later due to lack of evidence.

In 2017, the suspect was re-arrested on similar charges and was later released. According to detectives, the suspect are believed to have organised a group to launch an attack in commemoration of the slain Sheikh, Abud Rogo.

The other suspect who evaded arrest was identified as Bajuni woman, who had just alighted from the seized vehicle to deposit money at a mobile money agent.

She then disappeared into the crowd after witnessing the arrest of the others. Police also launched a manhunt for her, but she is yet to be arrested
