Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party leader Raila Odinga on Saturday, September 4, made a surprise attendance at a college student's birthday party in Githunguri, Kiambu County.

Raila drove in a small convoy to the homestead belonging to Gideon Gachuki and his family and was welcomed by residents and area Governor James Nyoro.

Those in attendance danced in jubilation as they waited with bated breath for the chance meeting with the former Premier.

Raila was ushered in at the compound with songs and chants. Gachuki's mother addressed the ODM leader and urged him to hearken to their plea.

"I request honourable Raila to get his hand on him so that he may continue to be doing great things because as his mother, have seen that he has a lot of vision.

"So my plea is that if you have something small, I request that you support us, if we have a few cows, we'll be able to deliver the milk and earn a living," she stated.

Raila, while addressing the crowd, fulfilled the mother's wish and gifted them a pregnant cow.

"I've brought the family a small token of appreciation since they are farmers. Since it's his (Gachuki's) birthday, I've brought a pregnant cow," he stated much to the cheers from the crowd.

Speaking to Kenyans.co.ke, ODM Communications Director Philip Etale affirmed the details of the event noting that Raila fulfilled the wish of the 21-year-old student who had picked up his number online and invited him to the birthday.

"It is true he did that, and Raila being a people's leader, and one who listens to everyone, chose to attend his birthday. He went there knowing that Gideon is like every other child is a Kenyan and also deserves the best.

"Baba's gesture was informed by the fact that despite your background, no matter where you come from, regardless of your ethnic tribe, you are Kenyan first," Etale stated.

As the 2022 General Election draws near, politicians are fond of coming up with tactics that seemingly appeal to the masses in order to woo the public and get their votes at the polls.
