The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) detectives on Saturday, September 4, nabbed a suspect accused of engaging in fraudulent sales of hired vehicles in Nairobi county.

In a statement released by the DCI on Sunday night, September 5, the detectives, while acting on intel, arrested the suspect in Gatundu as she allegedly tried to sell a hired vehicle to an unsuspecting victim.

The suspect is a resident in Kahawa Sukari along Thika Road.

However, unbeknownst to the suspect, the buyer had initially escorted a female friend to Kiambu DCI offices on July 15, 2021, to report a fraudulent case where she bought a hired Toyota Axio from the suspect. The victim had accused the suspect of using forged documents.

"The car had later been towed from a car wash moments after the victim paid the agreed amount of Ksh630,000," the DCI stated.

"This was after the responsible car hire agency reported to police of a stolen hired car, which detectives tracked to the car wash in Ruaka and confirmed that it was on hire from Nakuru."

The detectives caught wind of the business and accompanied the interested buyer to carry out the transaction.

The 33-year-old suspect was later arrested and taken to Kiambu police station.

"As she cools her heels in Kiambu police cells pending arraignment, detectives are pursuing other members of her syndicate," part of the statement read.

Perpetrators have hatched new schemes of trying to scam their victims which have seen scores of motorists lose their vehicles to the plots.

According to police data, 321 vehicles have been stolen in Nairobi from July to December 2020. This translates to 53 vehicles a month.
