The Kenya Primary School Headteachers Association (KEPSHA) chair, Johnson Nzioka, now says that pupils learning under the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) education system are the happiest.

Speaking on Tuesday, September 14, Nzioka moved to address parents' fears that pupils are overburdened with work stating that Kenya learners now have the highest happiness index.

Nzioka noted that learners are not stressed by exams and the assignments given are friendlier compared to previous curricula.

He also addressed concerns that teachers have not been well trained to tackle the new 2-6-3-3 system of education in Kenya.

The KEPSHA chair stated that teachers were involved in developing the curriculum and they know what is in the books the learners are using.

"Kenyan learners have the highest happiness index, thanks to Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC). They are not stressed by exams, and the assessment given is friendlier," stated Nzioka.

His sentiments were echoed by KICD Chief Executive Officer, Prof Charles Ong'ondo, who reiterated that teachers were involved in developing the CBC.

"Teachers were at the centre of developing CBC from its conceptualisation, curriculum designs, writing of course books and approval," Prof Ong'ondo said.

Education Cabinet Secretary, George Magoha, dismissed calls to change the CBC education system opining that the government was funding learners and ensuring they get the best.

The CS stated that CBC is here to stay and discouraged CBC parents from going to court to stop the new education system.

"Nothing is perfect. CBC is not perfect. But it left the station in 2018 and is moving forward," the Education CS stated.

This comes amid complaints by parents over the costs and assignments that learners are tasked with.

The National Assembly Education Committee on Friday, September 10, summoned the Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development (KICD) to address some of the pertinent issues affecting the implementation of the new curriculum

The Busia County Woman Representative Florence Mutua-led committee wants KICD to shed light on some of the thorny issues, threatening the future of CBC, especially the burdensome homework.
