If you are a regular social media user, you may be wondering why an old video of former First Lady Mama Lucy Kibaki is hitting the internet waves nearly a decade after it was shot.

The clip went viral after American star rapper and actress Belcalis Marlenis Almánzar, popularly known as Cardi B, shared it on her social media accounts - capturing Lucy's legendary no-nonsense approach while defending her marriage.

The video was taken in 2009 when the former First Lady addressed a heated press conference with her husband, Kenya's third President Mwai Kibaki as they defend their marriage as monogamous.

Kibaki clarified before the media that he only had one wife and that it was the lady standing right beside him.

The former head of state was denying media reports that he had married a second wife - a local politician and political activist.

"I want to make it clear, that I have only one dear wife.. and I do not have any other," Kibaki stated.

Many people who were unaware of the events related to Lucy's tough intervention - asking the media to ask any questions at the press conference - or forever keep quiet.

Others, the majority of them Kenyans, used the video to reminisce on the former First Lady's public personality - paying tribute to her no-holds-barred approach to issues that mattered to her.

Unlike most of Kenya's first ladies, Lucy spoke her mind freely and actively pursued her courses with gusto - sometimes much to the pain of the State House press team.

In 2009, after an inferno at Salgaa, Mama Lucy visited the victims of the tragedy at the Kenyatta National Hospital. She publicly called out the then Minister for Internal Security George Saitoti made remarks to the effect that the inferno was a lesson to the departed.

She stated that the unfortunate incident would not have happened if Saitoti's ministry sensitised Kenya against putting themselves in life-threatening situations.

President Kibaki had to issue an apology to the minister stating that he had full confidence in him and that he appreciated the good work he was doing.

In 2008, then Imenti Central MP Gitobu Imanyara went public about an incident where Lucy Kibaki allegedly slapped him during a meeting at State House.

Imanyara explained that he had been slapped because he had filed a case against the then First Lady after she assaulted Nation journalist Clifford Derrick in 2006.
