Days before schools reopen for second term, a section of parents are worried that they are struggling to raise fees as the clock ticks towards Tuesday, October 12.
Speaking to Kenyans.co.ke, National Parents Association Chairperson Nicholas Maiyo revealed that most parents had made a request to have the Ministry of Education give a grace period of two weeks for them to get fees.
He noted that most parents had lost their jobs and were financially struggling after the Covid-19 pandemic ravaged the economy.
In addition, he stated that the 10 days holiday was inadequate for the parents to get the necessary funds.
"I will petition the ministry to see if they will allow parents some grace period to clear second term fees," Maiyo stated.
Alternatively, Maiyo requested struggling parents to consider transferring their children from boarding schools to day ones to get better offers.
On the other hand, Education CS George Magoha on Friday, October 8, warned headteachers against sending learners away because of school fees.
Speaking in Kisumu County during the groundbreaking ceremony for the proposed Raila Odinga Secondary School, Magoha disclosed that the government had released Sh17.5 billion to schools across the country as capitation for the second term.
He noted that Ksh15.3 billion of the disbursement would go to secondary schools while Ksh2.2 billion would be channeled to primary schools.
“The money has been released to them and no school has any justification to send children home, “ Magoha said.
The CS assured that the implementation of the CBC was on course despite existing court cases.
“We are on course in regards to 100 per cent transition. CBC is also on course even though the matter is in court. Government must continue to work,” Magoha affirmed.
