Citizen TV journalist Jeff Koinange embarked on a week-long special assignment in the United States of America (USA).
Jeff left the country on Sunday, October 10 on a direct flight from Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) to John F. Kennedy International Airport.
During the assignment, the celebrated journalist will be based at the Big Apple and at the United Nations Headquarters in New York.
Jeff is on a special assignment to cover President Uhuru Kenyatta who historically assumes the rotating chairmanship of the United Nations Security Council for the month of October. The last time Kenya got the chance to chair the Security Council meeting was 23 years ago during the Late President Daniel Arap Moi's tenure.
While in the U.S, the journalist will highlight thematic areas that President Uhuru will address including Afghanistan, Somalia, Haiti, Vaccines, and strengthening Kenya's bilateral ties with Washington.
According to Kenya's Permanent Representative to the UN Ambassador Martin Kimani, the country's agenda at the Security Council is to offer ideas and solutions to global peace.
“The Security Council is a body that has the mandate to solve major challenges, but for many reasons has been unable to do so. We have ideas on how to do that, we have experience in building peace in our region and we bring those ideas and perspectives to the Council," stated Ambassador Kimani.
"Kenya is suggesting new innovations on how to approach particular conflict situations,” Kimani said, adding that the country is encouraging the UN Security Council to work closely with Africa.
Already, Jeff who is the only journalist from Kenya covering the main event witnessed Uhuru's bilateral talks with the UN Secretary-General Antonio Guteress.
He also witnessed the signing of trade deals between the Kenya Private Sector Alliance (KEPSA) and Corporate Council on Africa (CCA).
The Citizen TV anchor will also cover the Global Leaders' high-level discussion organised by the International Peace Institute (IPI) as a platform for world leaders to discuss contemporary subjects.
Security Council which Uhuru chairs is among the UN's most prestigious posts that make important decisions that shape how different nations respond to a range of issues globally.
President Kenyatta earlier told world leaders that Kenya is an active player in the decision-making table around the world. He also rooted for other African countries to be given much-needed priority in making decisions.
"Africa has earned its place among the league of nations not as a continent dependent on aid and handouts but as a continent on equal footing with the rest of the world," remarked Kenyatta.
