Police have arrested a drunk man who allegedly fled with a police rifle after being arrested.

According to a police occurrence book (OB) filed at Kileleshwa Police Station on Saturday, October 23, the drunk man is reported to have tricked the officers before speeding off with the pistol to an unknown location.

At around midnight, four officers attached to Kileleshwa Police Station were on their routine night patrol around Quickmatt Supermarket in Kaptei, when they found the drunk man in his car parked on the road.

Two officers handcuffed the man and were driving him to the police station when the man's car developed a mechanical problem. Reports indicate the man claimed he knew what the problem was and offered to help the officers.

He then requested the officers to uncuff him, which they gladly did. The officers then alighted to see how the man was fixing the car and left behind a rifle and a police communication device.

The drunk man sprang into action igniting his car and speeding off leaving the officers standing in disbelief. An attempt to chase and seize the man was futile with the officers not managing to even get the registration number of the car.

Speaking to Kenyans.co.ke, Kilimani Police Boss, Muturi Mbogo, confirmed the incident stating that officers swiftly sprang into action after the incident.

“Yes the incident took place yesterday and our officers responded by swiftly springing into action after the incident,” he stated.

The police boss further stated that even though the officers did not manage to capture the registration number of the car, they had since effected various mechanisms including footage from the CCTV to arrest the drunk suspect.

“We have used the CCTV footages to capture the drank suspect since our officers were not able to capture the registration number of the man’s car. We have also arrested him and he is in police custody," he added.

Mbogo noted that they had recovered the rifle belonging to one of the officers and commenced more investigations on the matter after which the suspect will be arraigned in court.

“We managed to recover the rifle belonging to the police officer and further investigations on the matter have begun. We will take the suspect to court on Monday to answer to his charges,” he affirmed.

The police boss also cautioned members of the public from evading arrest, stating that it is a criminal offense that is liable to punishment by the law.
