7 Die in Nasty Mombasa Accident

Seven people died on Saturday morning in a grisly road accident involving a matatu and a truck in Mariakani, Mombasa.

Kaloleni Acting OCPD Patrick Ngeiywa confirmed the accident which happened along Nairobi- Mombasa road, stating that the two vehicles rammed into each other from opposite directions leaving survivors with grave injuries.

''At around 9.00 am, we received information of a fatal motor accident at Bonje near Mariakiani. Five people died on the spot while two died as they received treatment at the Mariakani Sub County Hospital,'' Mr Ngaiywa said.

The police boss added that the lorry which was heading to Mombasa lost control and veered off the road, hit the Voi-bound matatu.

According to Mr Ngeiywa, all those who perished were passengers of the public service vehicle, travelling to Voi from Mombasa.

Mr Juma Karisa Kadenge, the conductor of the fateful matatu, told The Standard that his driver (name withheld) tried in vain to avoid colliding with the truck which had appeared from nowhere.

The truck driver is said to have fled the scene and according to police, the escapee was the only occupant of the lorry.

Police described Bonje as a black spot, warning motorists to observe caution when approaching the area.

Also this week on Wednesday, five people lost their lives after a tree fell on a matatu they were travelling in along Waiyaki Way near Kangemi estate in Nairobi.
