7 Senior Police Officers Sacked

Seven senior officers have been sacked after they failed to pass the vetting process conducted by the National Police Service Commission (NPSC). The officers were of the Senior Superitendent of Police (SSP), Senior Police (SP) and Assistant Superitendent of Police (ASP) ranks.

The fired officers were among 31 officers whose vetting results had been withheld pending investigations.

In a statement to the press, NPSC Chairman Johnstone Kavuludi stated that the officers were found unsuitable because of participating in forgery, crime, corruption, unprofessional conduct, human trafficking, owning fake bank and M-Pesa statements among other allegations.

The officers had been under scrutiny since October 2015 and were accused of mainly using M-Pesa to facilitate corruption in the force.

"It emerged that most M-Pesa kiosks within and around police stations are either owned or contracted by police officers for purposes of facilitating direct money transfers...the depositors are mostly motorists or junior officers making transfers to their seniors," read the statement in part.

The SSP's sent packing included: Lawrence Martin Kariuki, William Meto Kiprotich, Joseph Kipkemoi Kemeli and ASP Peter Kemboi Chemos. The SPs were Jackson Muriuki Magambo, Samuel Olentutu Olenkiti and Samuel Bore Kipwese.

Only 24 officers were cleared and found suitable to perform police duties by the commission after indepth analysis of their jobs.

Mr Kavuludi however, stated officers who had passed the vetting process could still be summoned by the commission, if it was determined that certain information was not available to the team at the time of making the determination.
